TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada recently reached out to the community to produce “Kids Take Center Stage” in partnership with Volunteers for America. The musical production, which starred local children of homeless families, was presented at the Southside Cultural Center on April 16th. TheatreWorks director Nasya Mancini, currently Miss Sparks Outstanding Teen, said “I have been going to the Volunteers of America Family Shelter weekly and working with the children living there and teaching them basic acting skills. This is the first of many performances the children will perform for their families and community members. I continue to encourage and empower all the kids to take part in this performance. Working with them makes me feel so good and so happy and when they smile it makes me feel so remarkable because I know I had something to do with that smile. I am honored to have this opportunity to work with such amazing children and I pledge to make the most of it. It is a privilegeto spend time with these kids. Throughout my year of service I will teach children about the precious opportunities of self- expression, accomplishment and personal growth, which I hope will result in greater confidence and willingness to try new things. As a result, they will acquire new skills in theater and acting. Through these activities I hope to teach others not to judge or look down on these families. Poverty and homelessness can touch any of us anytime and these families are just like you and I.” Attendees included Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.
