Rent is a rock musical following impoverished, aspiring artists in NYC's East Village facing love, dreams, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, loosely based on Puccini's La Bohème, focusing on filmmaker Mark, musician Roger (HIV+), dancer Mimi (HIV+), professor Collins, and drag queen Angel, exploring their lives, struggles, relationships, and mortality over a year, culminating in poignant reflections on living and loving in the face of illness and loss, especially Angel's death and Mimi's near-death experience.
